TRYBE Volunteers Bonding 2011 – East Coast Park

A team of TRYBE volunteers, interns and staff ensembled like a whole tribe of ants at East Coast Park for a small bonding and learn more for all the existing and new volunteers that joined us.

After the short chat and mixing around at the Hut Reception, we moved to the open field for a gathering and icebreaking games (some sort, its just that everyone knows almost about anyone)
Basia and Min explaining the game – Facebook!, where you go around collecting profiles of others and spread it on to others.

The next game is really interesting, you have to act out the words which you will be given, for others to see and guess your actions.

During the game you will win a lot of speciality items like Toilet Paper, Empty Coke Cans, Strings and such and you will be wondering what is all this is for … Until …

We are going to build something really cool, some wooden planks from Ikea (meant for a bed frame actually), but its now meant for us.

Get the sides wooden frames up as well by tying lots of rope and masking tapes.

We add a small stick on the top (Can you guess what it is right now?)

And add another stick perpendular to the previous stick.

Than we add a cup to the stick!

After adding some colouring and design, ta-da! This is our semi-final workpiece!
And probably you have guessed it by now ..

We are building and playing our own Angry Birds, this is water bombs with all the birds on it, ain’t it cute! Its all hand made by our team here okay!

Our very own superstar, that shoots the birds out later! We are going to cover that in just a bit.
But we faced a really big problem – rain, and we are forced to come into the hut and pause our activities .. but work goes on for all the other groups.

Some groups tried to patch, yes and the curtains you see here is made out of toilet paper! Cool right, innovative!

And than we had lunch, so we had this really cool ~~volunteer~~ staff now at TRYBE to do us some really poses! (She is Min, and she is the planner for our event, yay!)

So we had really lots of food, sushi, 933 curry bread with chicken, drinks and chips.

Once lunch was over, we head back to our locations and start playing and tweaking our Angry Birds machines! So this is my group.

And than this is Vege’s group’s Angry Birds shooter!

Finally followed by Bingrong’s Angry Birds shooter!

Starting off with my group, we have 5 water bombs (birds), and 5 tries to see which birds goes the furthest! (Yes, there are no pigs)

This is our very last try of our last bird, you can see how far it’s stretched, and our structure seems to be able to take the load fully!

All the Angry Birds on the ground, so we could easily see which flies the most and the highest.

All the volunteers had great time and great company during the day itself.

TRYBE Perseverance for Excellence at Bukit View Secondary School – Sec 3 / 2011

After a year battling with the ‘paper rush’ syndrome, I finally had moved on to my next path of my education path. So that leaves me with some time to volunteer! and yes, this time round I am at Bukit View Secondary for an event about self management for students, which ultimately will lead them to success and move on to the next step of their education level.

Start saying HELLO to the class of 3E2 of 2011 in Bukit View Secondary!

It all starts off with a single and simple question – Are you stressed?
Who isn’t?

To counter that, we had a simple activity – Laugh it off!
Be cheerful every single day of your life! – Start your day off with a joke or two.

Stress often shows its attributes and weaknesses, learn to identify and tackle the problem. Its not all about avoiding the problem.

Learning in progress to handle daily problems. Is it because of some prioritization mishaps contributing to your stress load? The students find out!

Can you crush the can? 2 students find out why some cans are harder to crush and some habits are die hard!

How much can you fit in? Will the items flow out? How do you know you ran out of time? How do you make use your time wisely?

Sometimes there is things in your boundary which you can control – It’s not always fate that determines everything.

The students had learnt many self management skills which some I could not disclose due to copyright reasons and I hope to see them to be successful endeavors someday!
Your final results at the end of the day is not due to fate, but rather boundaries which you could control!

After volunteering with TRYBE close to 4 years in dozens of schools and spending more than 200 – 300+++ hours in all TRYBE related events, it was a really eye opening experience, many things have changed over the years, and I believe that the organization I’m volunteering have seen me through my entire rocky / transition path of my life. They have guided me in many ways possible and I am really grateful to continue putting in time for the rest of the youths which are still unclear in their future plans.
During the Volunteer appreciation party, TRYBE, would like to thank all of us reaching to the youths. The event is held in *SCAPE MMS (Near Somerset MRT) + Scape Park.

So this is the set of “LUCKY” Draw. (Please, not that lucky, tissue box or water gun anyone? HAHAHAHA. The best prize inside there is a Nike Water Bottle. I think the wrapping is more expensive than the gift inside. They made the gift recipients open the prizes on stage)

After you are done with registration, take a look at one of these photos and choose one of the templates to put your photos in.

Once you are done, snap the photo and they will make it into a very nice card, which I will feature it in the end of this blog post!

The food for the day was pretty good, lots of seafood and its all catered. The desert is some kind of jelly and a really nice flavored drink.

TRYBE BRANDED CUPCAKES. THEY HAD ONE LAST TIME IN TRYBE OFFICE. THIS really taste amazing, the chocolate flavor is amazing.

Jamie and Jasmine (TRYBE Staff), they helped me through my life in TRYBE as a volunteer with them.

It’s really hangover, lots of food around here. BUT WAIT, the programmes haven’t even started yet! HAHA. SO yeah.

The starting Thank You message is by the Executive Director of TRYBE, Nic Lee. Someone which is really nice, you should try talking to him. (Hint).

Probably one of the most funniest man on stage, one of the award winners of last year’s Mr Charisma, T-Ru!
He was in TRYBE even before I joined and we spoke for quite a lil bit last time before, he is now in Singapore Airlines as a Jr Pilot.

We had many love presentations this year, many people getting married. Like Jasmine and Tony, and so much more too. This one is Raffy, he brought me into TRYBE and helped me throughout my volunteering period.

TRYBE Shoot Out 2010!

Back in the June Holidays, TRYBE invited us to a mini photography workshop in collaboration with IWP Studios and we were happy to be into it. Here is some photos of this event:

Joining us today is Jason Leong, the person behind IMP studios.

We were having photography lessons. Like knowing some common camera terms and tips. Like the rule of the thirds and Macro mode and such.

After knowing some stuff about photography and such, we started to go onto streets to start snapping photos.

We came to a point where we have to end all the fun! We bid farewell to Jason and he left.

TRYBE | Dare 2 Dream at Yuan Ching Secondary S2 270210

This is my second year running at Yuan Ching Secondary for Trybe, running the Dare to Dream programme, like I did last year.

It is on a Saturday and it will be running until 2pm, from 7am.

Like every Trybe event, briefing is something not to be missed, it provides facilitators with valuble information for whats coming up.

This year, we will be taking the whole of Secondary 2 of Yuan Ching Secondary 2010.
–

We conducted the usual profiling for students and got to know what they are good in so they can find their future career path in what they are good at.

We also got them to write their names and what they are good in, and particularly for this guy, he is good in everything.
–
For this year in change, we have lots of interactive lessons instead of theory, the plan allowed lots of human interactions and activities.

One such example of a activity, is showing different types of expression of different types of profiles.

It goes beyond just, reading, studying and mugging. Activity also includes smell and identifying different types of scent.

I would like to wrap-up the whole activity with just the school motto.

Ending Thoughts: I felt that with new practical activities, students understanding level will definitely rise up as compared to the normal theory work. Students felt that they have control of their future and understand their future paths with this programme. This will enable them to find out what they are good at and take steps to improve at it.

Trybe Appreciation for 2009!

Visited Trybe Centre at Tampinies recently, had a great meal with the staff at Trybe!

Had lunch there, kindly sponsored by Yat!, an intern at Trybe which got the prata’s from the coffee shop nearby. Which taste great!

After doing some cleaning up at the kitchen.. We headed out for some drinks. Which Mirabel wished to talk to me about some stuff.

Mirabel told me about many things in Trybe that happened and after those, we chat and she gave me a super nice plastic bag worth of items!

Agree with me the packing is so good and neat!

It is a tiny shoe, letter and t-shirt.

Secondly, the T-Shirt!

This T-Shirt is ~~XS Size~~ XL Size. And it is quite big for me still. This shirt is nicely made by machine and it is very cooling
It includes ‘Mr Publicity’ behind the shirt. Unique!

Thirdly, and most importantly, the letter!

When opened:

The card pops out on my hand and it has the organization’s logo and website on it. Very professionally done!

I will not mention about the content inside So cheesy!!

Fourthly, The Singapore Flyer Tickets!

I have never been there before. Now its a dream to take a look at the biggest ferry wheel in Singapore.

Trybe | Yuan Ching Secondary / Sec 1N1 / YUDI

Once again, its great to volunteer for yet another programme at Yuan Ching Secondary under TRYBE – You Can Do It, and its great to impact the youths in class 1N1. Thanks to all the facilitators and to Dexter for leading the event on that day itself and to all the other facilitators which perfected us into a big team.

During the morning, we had a programme briefing and got started to work and plan out our objectives led by Dexter.

We got into the classroom with smiling faces in the audience on students.

We bought in many exciting activities and programmes – In the end its YOU controlling yourself.
I also managed to get a chance to lead in one of the games – Blow Wind Blow
Here I am participating in another game as well.

Ha, guess me.

We also got them to do a simple pledge, so there won’t be any chances and cheating and to bring our message across.

After that, we went to the core of the programme, which is the character analysis.

We had our ‘Recess’ soon after that and Hey, its break time!

And than we had a squirrel game, as a form of ‘warm up’ after our activity.

Yeah, and you are on Camera.

Soon after that, we managed to deliver our messages of Pro Positive Living.
Due to the confidentiality of this programme, I cant reveal much of it.

In the end, we played a game involving Orange ‘Dots’, which is to stick on someone who deserve your respect on!

TRYBE Volunteer Camp 2009

Our camp site is at ACS Barker Road, its great, Thanks to the TVC 09 Comm, and what must I still say, it was great!

As you can see, this is quite late, but its still pretty alright, right?

Camp site is inside the Oldham hall.

Our sleeping location was great, fully airconditioned and such.

Here is more of the Hall location, where we basically learn new skills and bond with others.

There’s a minimart located around here as well.

Here is just a simple breakdown of what happened:

We played Captain’s ball with so many things, like Basketball, Tennis Ball and ..

Yes, chicken!

We just kept tossing this chickens everywhere around the area, treating it as captain’s ball, its cold and slimy!

We also had a special workshop and we each done a poster on Trybe Values.

Min was talking about the 7′ Experience Race, its like an amazing race. Lets see.

We went to places around Orchard Road and there are many people located at different locations.

Br was waiting for our team’s first arrival.

After finshing the game’s and opening the ‘plates’ in correct order in the least times and tries possible, we moved on to the next station.

We went to the next station, which is completing a few task of items within 100 seconds.

Okay, so lets wait for the ‘Go’ signal and shout our names in order once we go, and only 1 name can be shouted at once!

The whole team have to jump on the rope together!

We also have to use our face too look for mentos which is located in a paper plate filled with flour.

After that we had lunch at KFC.

After the race, we have addtional activities, and some trainings.

At dinner, it was really special, it actually portrayed servant leadership as the staff’s and volunteers in Trybe actually served us dinner and bring it out for us, and they did it like the first class waitors, I see at hotels! Wow!

They greeted us upon arrival.

Thats where Jamie make’s her speech and says that it was all about servant leadership, I leader is not about leading and commanding others, its also about serving others.

After that, we did a final reflection, wrap up and shared some videos on what projects we have worked on throughout this camps and basically thats all!

We managed to ‘taupok’ some people, and for those who didnt get it, the next camp is waiting for you! LOL.

Yes, and my wonder girls video lip sync, which should not be there in the first place, is there, now.

Trybe Centre is a great place with so many convenience stores nearby. There is 4 coffee centres, NTUC, CK Department Store, Bakery, 2 Bubble Tea shops and Wet Market, all right beside Trybe.
Thats so convenient!
