iSpace 2010 | Infocomm Clubs

iSpace is a yearly event held by the Infocomm Club Ambassadors and funded by IDA Singapore, Infocomm Development Authority. Our aim of this event is to get Primary School students to be interested in the line and field of Infocomm Club technology, and from there the Infocomm Club CCA will cultivate their interest in it and thus bringing them further. The event is held at Science Centre Singapore as insipired by the iSpace excibition.
This year, I’ll like to thank All the 2010 Infocomm Club Ambassadors, especially the planning team led by Axel and friends as well as the 2009 Ambassadors which continued their support since last year. Of course, the EXCO’s, Bradford, Benedict, Ian and myself. Thanks everyone for making such a successful event, I wouldn’t even think or smell about it when I was known about it.

We had full house event this year close to 300 people in total, we use the biggest presentation theatre they had, and their projectors and equipment are all in full HD and 3D combined, and I have to give a shoutout to Jeff from Science Centre for this amazing preparation work. This theatre we use was previously used by the renowned Body World exhibitions which was promoted on National TV : Channel 5.

Imagine the number of staff we had in our team, we had around 60 to 70 people to control the situation in total. And my role there as a head of Communications and Marketing was quite hell actually.

We presented a number of stuff, like what you see on the screen, the Infocomm Talent Facebook group, and I recommend you join in too, you can experience more than what you can!

Of course, like every seminar and event, we have guest speakers, and this time he is from IM Innovations, a partner actually recommended by Science Center and IDA.

And we have mass games, as usual the few games you play in camps and energy and bond building games which I hope, will bring students of such a young age, further.

Lunch time is sponsored by IDA as well and we had many food queues and Primary school students seems to enjoy it just as much as we do when executing this event!

After that, we have a Up! 3D movie back in the same theatre!

E-Learning Day 2010 (AES)

It’s E-learning day again during the holiday’s and we spent a day working, and during the last few hours, we took a full off break and when that happens, you must know that my room could turn into a entertainment centre in no time.

Don’t ask me what’s that, I think that were all the random photos.

This is a shot while we are working and playing PlayStation 3 on the other hand. So it’s pretty up and down kinda thing.

TRYBE | Dare 2 Dream at Yuan Ching Secondary S2 270210

This is my second year running at Yuan Ching Secondary for Trybe, running the Dare to Dream programme, like I did last year.

It is on a Saturday and it will be running until 2pm, from 7am.

Like every Trybe event, briefing is something not to be missed, it provides facilitators with valuble information for whats coming up.

This year, we will be taking the whole of Secondary 2 of Yuan Ching Secondary 2010.
–

We conducted the usual profiling for students and got to know what they are good in so they can find their future career path in what they are good at.

We also got them to write their names and what they are good in, and particularly for this guy, he is good in everything.
–
For this year in change, we have lots of interactive lessons instead of theory, the plan allowed lots of human interactions and activities.

One such example of a activity, is showing different types of expression of different types of profiles.

It goes beyond just, reading, studying and mugging. Activity also includes smell and identifying different types of scent.

I would like to wrap-up the whole activity with just the school motto.

Ending Thoughts: I felt that with new practical activities, students understanding level will definitely rise up as compared to the normal theory work. Students felt that they have control of their future and understand their future paths with this programme. This will enable them to find out what they are good at and take steps to improve at it.

How To : Set up a router in your home network (Wireless / LAN Network) and configure it effortlessly

Hello, today I am going to walk you through on how to easily and painlessly with no technical knowledge (idiotproof) required to install a new wireless router on your home Internet connection / network.
–
If you already have an existing wireless network at home and you wish to extend it, you can buy wireless extenders at IT stores.
If you use an integrated box, like SingTel’s Mio. – Which has everything inside, like Telephone, Internet and TV, all built in.
Chances are high that it include wireless networking functionality, check with your telco for more information.

If you have a modem that comes with router you might want to skip to Step 7 to set it up.

If you do not have an existing wireless network and wish to add one, read on!

First, I assume that you have a modem / ADSL, if you have zero idea what a modem / ADSL is, it looks something like that. Many companies do Modem, the common one’s like Motorola or Prolink.

Secondly, I assume you got a wireless router off your IT shop. In my case, I received a brand new Linksys WRT54G2 router a few days ago.

Thirdly, I also assume that you pay for internet bills and you have an existing internet connection with your provider
–
Alright, once you fulfill the 3 requirements as above, you are good to go!

We are not going to use the documentation and CD tools provided as we are going to manually set it up ourselves!

Lets start off learning a few names and stuff in the box, shall we.

This is a LAN (Local Area Network) Cable, this cable allow network packets or in simpler terms, allow computers and networks to link to each other.

In the box, it contains the AC Adapter.

Lastly, the router itself (Which is the mastermind of the routing connections at your home), and after that, lets get started!

After knowing whatever inside the box, lets set it up!

1) Plug in the AC Power in the socket.

2) Pull off all relevant stickers and plug in the power. After that, switch on the Power.

3) Inside the box should provide you a LAN cable right? Plug that in.

4) Plug the other end into the source of the internet, in this case, a modem.

5) Look for a network which have the highest signal and which is unsecured and identical to your own router. You may also buy or find another LAN cable to connect your router to your computer.

6) You could get Windows 7, which I am using at the moment to help me set up, however, in my case, as I mentioned earlier, we will be using our own methods to set it up without installing additional software.

If you are a Windows Vista / 7 user, please skip this and go direct to Step 8.
Windows XP users, please go to the Control Panel Start -> Control Panel OR Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
At the left hand corner, switch to Classic View and go to Network Connections, if you are using Wireless, click on Wireless Network Connection or the manufacturer of your Wireless card and it should show some kind of signal bar on it. However, If you are using LAN Cable, click on Local Area Connection and once you are done, right click and go to Status and click on Support followed by Details under Connection Status. After you are done, skip to step 11

8 ) For Windows 7 and Vista users, go to Control Panel by going to Start -> Control Panel than search Network and Sharing Center to get there.

9) Look for your internet connection, once you found it click on it.

10) Than click on details.

11) Here comes the confusing part, look for default gateway and take down the IP address.

12) Than use your web browser, like Internet Explorer or Firefox and enter that IP address inside it.

13) You should see a username and password screen and click here to help you with it [Replace the search line with your Router Manufacturer and Model number]. If that do not help you, look inside your box or call the support line and request for the default username and password for your router.

14) After you are inside the system, it varies from router to router, you might want to go into your settings or administration console to change your router password.

15) Go to Wireless Security and change the basic security settings. Firstly, you can change your Network Name, or known as the SSID to something else, like your own name, or anything else.

16) Go to wireless security and change to WPA Personal, which is the most secure method available for wireless protection, so you won’t be a victim for those who tap on your network to download pirated materials. If WPA Personal give problems, choose WEP ( A Legacy protection method ), but it does it job too.

17) After that, set a password and save it!

Your router may restart and if you are using a wireless network connection while setting it up, you may have to reconnect to the network and key in your new security credentials!

Firstly, I am wondering who uses Diskette now? Furthermore, this is running on a Windows Vista PC!

In Campus life, here is a simple assignment which asks me to write a letter to the Manager of the Police Station about neighbors placing objects around the walkway and windows which may cause killer litter and endangering someone’s life.

Also in Campus Life, during the Monfortian Achiever Programme (MAP) lesson, which aims to enrich values in ourselves. Here states the severity of threats.

In Campus, look at the Koi fish swimming aimlessly in the small pond, its just really nice to look at it after a day’s of work and hearing the sound of water is just.. (Well, boomz)

Over to love of the Chinese, could someone explain to me what the chunk of Chinese words is trying to say.

Total Defence Day + Chinese New Year Celebrations at AES

Greetings!
Today we celebrate Total Defense day with Chinese New Year at Assumption English School, and its great to write a report after this event.
Even though my photo capturing device is almost confiscated today, so I took quite a substantial amount of risk to type this out!
–
Last night, we received an sms that says:

” Remember to have your breakfast and bring your water bottle when coming to school ”

We went to class today and everything was normal. However, during 8.30am, when we went to the toilet and tried to use the water cooler, no water came out!

So during class lesson, we went through the Total Defence slides and such, and this is one such pledge we wrote for Singapore’s (www.iwill.sg) campaigne.

During the lessons, electricity was suddenly cut off, with no reasons why.

In less than 20 minutes, the fire alarm broke out and my ex-form teacher, Mr Johnson came on air to make a quick announcement:

” This is a fire evacuation exercise, and a fire has been broke out in the Chemistry Lab 1, please use the fire evacuation routes and make your way to basketball court ASAP ”

We got out of the classroom and went to the field..

Do you notice Mr Yong – the teacher which is wearing bright red shirt in this sunny day? (Pretty striking).

Soon after, the discipline master went to the platform to make a quick announcement, and in short, he was saying that the canteen was also ” on fire “, so the kind school has sponsored snacks for us.

Which is actually just plain Khong Guan biscuits and water.

After the sun tanning session we had in the basketball court, we went back to close, go through the total defense aspects again and we were told to go to the hall for Chinese New Year celebrations.

Can you see how packed this place is.

While they are below, we are on the top, as there is not enough sits below.

The teachers have a back sit at well – the back.

First on the agenda, like every other events we have, the principal speech.

Secondly, we have the band which perform some kind of chinese song:

Thridly, our school’s dance ensemble performs on the stage.

Fourthly, the National Education Ambassadors perform a skit on the stage:

Fifth, we have a band which sang on the stage, and I have no photos of that due to a teacher (Ask me more, personally), which took away my photo taking device. Probably in an attempt of .. Feel in the blanks yourself.

With that, let me wish you a Happy Chinese New Year in the year of the Tiger!

Trybe Appreciation for 2009!

Visited Trybe Centre at Tampinies recently, had a great meal with the staff at Trybe!

Had lunch there, kindly sponsored by Yat!, an intern at Trybe which got the prata’s from the coffee shop nearby. Which taste great!

After doing some cleaning up at the kitchen.. We headed out for some drinks. Which Mirabel wished to talk to me about some stuff.

The Vanilla Blended which I ordered.

Mirabel told me about many things in Trybe that happened and after those, we chat and she gave me a super nice plastic bag worth of items!

Agree with me the packing is so good and neat!

It is a tiny shoe, letter and t-shirt.

Secondly, the T-Shirt!

This T-Shirt is ~~XS Size~~ XL Size. And it is quite big for me still. This shirt is nicely made by machine and it is very cooling
It includes ‘Mr Publicity’ behind the shirt. Unique!

Thirdly, and most importantly, the letter!

When opened:

The card pops out on my hand and it has the organization’s logo and website on it. Very professionally done!

I will not mention about the content inside So cheesy!!

I have never been there before. Now its a dream to take a look at the biggest ferry wheel in Singapore.

Sending a Self Address Stamped Envelope (SASE) Overseas/Local

Hello Guys!
Today I am going to send a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) over to New York, USA from Singapore. So here is a easy guide on how to do it.
Basically, a SASE is a letter sending to an individual or a company, requesting for documents and stuff. Companies and charities use SASEs in order to save on postage; a consumer can afford the cost of a stamp and envelope, but the business does not want to pay for the postage on all the letters it sends out.
So in short, when sending a SASE out, you have to pay for all the postage from the origin to your destination, and from the destination back to the origin. So the company or business doesn’t have to pay for the letter and postage as its all included inside your letter to them! – You have to bear the cost of all postages, To and Fro.

ITEM 1:
So firstly, I prepare the letter outside to post to the destination (In my case:USA) first, I write the recipient’s address (And name/company) on the front, and write the sender’s address on the back. Just in case when things go wrong and my letter went missing, it will come back to me.
And remember, if you are sending this SASE letter overseas / to a foreign country, always remember to buy international stamps.

ITEM 2:
Secondly, prepare your message to your recipient, so when your friend/company gets it, they will know what you want and they will send you back on what you need.

ITEM 3:
(This only applies if you are sending a SASE overseas)
Thirdly, prepare your international reply coupons and put it into your envelope, it cost SGD$2.50 in Singapore. This international reply coupons allow your recipient to exchange this coupon in stamps (In their own local country). For example, you cant buy another country’s stamps in your country right? So you can attach this international reply coupon in your letter and when it reached the destination, they can exchange this international reply coupons into their own local country stamps to paste it on and send it back to you.

ITEM 4:
Prepare the letter (Self Addressed Envelope) to allow your recipient to reply to you. Which means, write your own address on the front of the letter and fold it, so it fits the envelope. (Unless your first envelope [ITEM 1], is very big) AND DO NOT SEAL THIS ENVELOPE!! (This Self Addressed Envelope / reply envelope from the destination to the origin)

So now you have finished preparing all the 4 items right?
Put Item 2,3 and 4 into Item 1.
So which means, Item 1, which is the letter you are going to send to your destination (In my case, USA), should include an international reply coupon, a short note to tell them what to do (When they reply to you) and a letter for them to reply.
(Skip the international reply coupons and affix local stamps if you are going to send a SASE letter in your own country / city)

After that, SEAL ITEM 1, and thats it!

Lastly, you got everything in place, right? So its always good to register your articles (It cost an additional SGD$2.20) as it will get processed faster and its more reliable as it will get ‘more attention’ and tracking for your goods. Registered articles is usually flown via Airmail, thru the airplane!
So, to register the mail, you have to fill up this form. Which you can pick it up from the post office.

Once you are done with registering your mail, you can hand up your registered mail slip and your mail to the post office which will help you do the rest.

They will settle everything else!

They should give you a registered mail slip, as it includes your tracking number to track your letters and articles online and it shows that you have paid!

Been to Cathay at Orchard recently to have dinner, and something strike me when I see something..

After looking at the wheel clamp for around 5 minutes and taking a few photos, I noticed the notice on the car windscreen and took a look at it.

I was surprised that the un-clamping of the vehicle only cost $107 SGD. It should be much more, further more he is parking at a location where it writes.. ” DO NOT PARK HERE, (INCLUDES SATURDAY AND SUNDAY) ”

The security guard came down after seeing me at the building’s CCTV camera’s and he explained to me that the carpark lot is only reserved for the Bosses in Cathay. I took a closer photo and left.

Basically, my form teacher Mr Yong went to play with some guns and he mentioned that back in the old days when he is serving National Service (NS), he used to be one of the people wearing uniforms and throwing such guns.
That sounds really cool.
