The last few weeks have been daunting with lots of planning and programmes, and this is a competition in particular I would like to post about. The lack of updates on this site previously due to some of my events in my life have caused questioning among my peers. So this is something I would like to share with you.

The last few weeks I have been preparing for this competition at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and its called Speechcraft, which is a public speaking competition supported by Toastmasters International.

Preliminaries

I started off with my preliminary rounds of Speechcraft in iSpark Studio (School of Film and Media Studies) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and I met different people from different faculties and schools. People from all walks of life comes together to achieve a single purpose; to speak and to share their knowledge and thoughts.

For the preliminary round, a speech can only be 3mins max, and must be at least 2 minutes. Any topic for your speech is fine, as long it does not touch the controversial subjects.

(Another participant presenting their speech; the archives did not have any of my photos )

My speech had been an interesting one, frankly I only prepared my simple speech in less than an hour for the preliminary round and I felt that I did badly initially. If you are interested, my preliminary speech can be found here. However, I kept practicing my speech over and over again in my mind and executed it on stage, luckily it was delivered with no obvious flaws.

The judges were pretty serious and at the same time, really supportive and smiled when there were pauses or times where I couldn’t remember some parts which I am supposed to.

=============================================================

Semi Finals

The preliminary rounds were over, and I was notified that I had to be in the next round, the semi finals. The format is slightly different, the time limits were increased and the minimum presentation time of the speech is bumped up too. In this slightly different format, which is also held in the same venue at iSpark (School of Film and Media Studies) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. All participants will be held in a holding room and will be transferred to a waiting room, which the Speechcraft Organising Committee will show the speaker 5 topics which they can talk about. And will be given only 5 minutes to prepare their speech contents. Which they will than be transferred to the speaker’s room where they will speak to their heart’s content.

I wouldn’t say that I spoke the best, but the lack of preparation is really a killer, I don’t have much objectives in mind and I spoke whatever that came hitting in my mind, which is not a really good experience, but I managed to overcome it by coming up with a simple agenda during my speech; not during the preparation which I was busy making my mind up.

I ended up speaking about this topic, out of the 5 topics on the paper:

“If you were able to rewind time, how old you want to be, and why?”

I spoke about rewinding time back to a primary school student, where I won’t have to make teachers angry, and to get their trust and respect. I also discussed about building stronger friendships when I am young and stop being so playful and careless. But the general idea is, if you keep dwelling in the past, you will not see any improvement in your life but to apply them practically in your current life, which reflects more and more on my character. I have also discussed that all the things in the past isn’t perfect and our brain only selectively remember the happier parts. So why not build a better future, it sounds like a brand new fairytale but I hope I had proven my point of the history is just the building blocks of the future.

===============================================================================

Trainings

Probably one of the most interesting and interactive lectures where everyone talks and shares their opinions on debates, argumentative and ethics. Everyone speak their minds out and presents their thoughts and findings to everyone else.

Many language skills were picked up, in this Rhetoric lesson, its about Argumentation and Debate with Ms Rajoo, one of our club advisors here at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Student Toastmasters Club.

Debate is process of inquiry and advocacy ..

Friends around me smiling happily. Well, me too.

Who told you what you believed was always right? See this example ..

Discussion in progress about ethics; is it right or wrong? What differentiates?

Further discussion about a case scenario, who is in the wrong? It’s not always the person who commits the mistakes that are in the wrong, what leads up to that?

Mr Bala speaks about speech techniques, how could one’s speech be more engaging and visually entertaining, not only in the form of speech. How to build up their spirit of the audience, and to bring out the sway the opinions of them.

The event started from late afternoon till 11pm, it was a great lesson which I still remember details off, not your usual history lesson that is.

===============================================================================

Finals

Probably one of the largest events that I had prepared in weeks, the finals ain’t something that easy. As usual, the time limits were bumped and the venue had changed to be a theatre with a public audience.

School has started, in just a mere fortnight, it was my birthday, and its here. It really is! So I have no clue about it when the big birthday cake got into my face after a lesson (when school ended). So as I was about to leave class, everyone grab my hands and toes..

We got an amazing group photo with the guys.

And on the flipside we got it on the ladies ..
So what happened after the group photo – are you really INTERESTED TO KNOW ABOUT IT?
WATCH this video with sound and watch all the way till the end, really

..

I know that there will be some people which just refuse to click ‘play’ on the video itself, so I will just provide a small jist on what it is all about.

So are you interested in the video now?

Go and watch it now.
(Shameless self promotion brings me to no avail)

Thanks to my whole class at 1T04 of Ngee Ann Polytechnic – School of InfoComm Technology for making this work out.
Really appreciate it, even though it could be quite appalling at times.

Alright.
That’s it, bye!
I am going buy a proper cake for myself, damn!

Students (In special camps and related activities) and visiting lecturers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic can enjoy a brilliant stay at a 40 unit air-conditioned modern apartment located at TheLoft@94 / Or also known as the NP loft, which is part of the school’s campus.

Once reaching TheLoft@94, you can forget about your cards and keys. All it needs is a PIN code to access the room and you will be into the room in no time.
I will bring you through the entire Loft@94 apartment, which houses 3 bedrooms, 2 toilets, a kitchen, 2 large sofa’s convertible beds and it’s all fully air-conditioned.

Once inside the loft, you will enjoy 2 large sofa’s which could double up as a bed. It is the best place to enjoy a small light breakfast or two.

Bed to Sofa Tutorial
Just for the record, if you like to change your bed into sofa. You just have to remove the orange cover on the top.

Than just try to ‘pull’ the bed open. As in try pull the bed from one end to open the enclosed end.

Cool isn’t it. The sofa is now a bed and not only that, you can use the orange sheet as your blanket which is ultra thick and warm / fuzzy inside.
Moving on!

The kitchen is really cool as well, it comes with a fridge (not those mini ones), a microwave oven, a door to the backyard of the house (not the balcony), a sink and just a bar counter.

Now heading to the bedrooms, this is our first bedroom, it comes with 2 beds, a locker and wardrobe (at the side of the first bed, not in this picture) at the side of the beds. The beds also come with a bedside table at the centre and 2 power plugs.
I kinda noticed that all the beds are super single sized. – The beds are slightly bigger than single size.

Let’s take a look at the master bedroom, it comes with a twin double decker bed with a bed facing beside a balcony which is really awesome. It’s just the balcony which doesn’t comes with a curtain, so you will most likely get the hot sun in the morning. But fear not! – there’s a curtain behind to block out the sun out and since the sun rises from the east, you are safe!
The Master Bedroom comes with a toilet and a large drawer to put your valuables.

The balcony allows an eye opening view of the entire Bukit Timah view, the PIE expressway (along the flyover) and a church.

The toilet comes with anything you might probably dream off – except for toiletries, so remember to get that. But don’t worry, they provided toilet paper.
I will not review the second toilet – it’s so stalky! (I remembered someone was using it)

The third bedroom comes with 2 beds, a locker and a safe box, to put all your valuables in it. (As in its literally a safe box, and its fully digital)

I hope I had provided you a really good insight inside theloft@94.
Now go out and play!

Have fun lofting!
Jeremy

FYI, something I found out was, there is actually hot water supply, but you need to activate it by switching on the switch at the bottom of the kitchen sink.
Remember that!

PPS:

I didn’t know that the security system at the loft is running on 4 Eveready batteries.

PPPS: You could always refer to Ngee Ann’s SDAR website about theloft@94.

A few weeks ago, after an offer by Deal.com.sg, I went to snap up that offer and head over to the Indian Times restaurant for a blend of good Indian food. So I am going to share with you some of the photos and food over there.

You will be greeted by the reception and a seat will be served. If you have about 3 to 4 people (and make a reservation), you get to seat on an wooden platform and get access to better seats and bigger tables.

However as a normal visitor to the restaurant, you will get a decent table with a mini BBQ oven in the centre.

Their dinner buffet is a really eye opening experience and the kebabs is well flavoured and textured. Just that it is a little dry, but luckily, its not overly oily like some of them you find outside. The meat portion is generous as well and the vegetables are well flavoured.

The cool Indian bread, also known as Naan, is an oven baked flatbread, its well baked, not overly burnt. It is not too salty nor too sweet and it provides just the right flavour.

The buffet queue starts from here, I have to start off apologizing as I do not have much knowledge about Indian food, but I hope my photos provide some inspiration here.

First up, its an Indian rice, the rice is not the normal ones you find at the local supermarket. Its those kind of rice which is really long and thin and contains lots of spices along with green peas, carrots and a little corn.

The next dish is Raitha – Yogurt with Onions, Tomatoes and Cucumber and Dal Palak, Yellow Lentils Cooked with Spinach till perfection.

The next dish is fried-tempura look like long beans which looks really nice. It tastes really nice as well. – Although it feels overly fried, the overall crisp is there.

The Potato Masala is also really nice and it provides the blend of flavour and taste in the herbs and spices. Just that it taste a little to potato-ey, without anything else. I know that the restaurants also cater to vegetarians as well.

The spinach chicken shows the distinct style of Indian cooking and the chicken provides a good aroma to the dish, along with a blend of nutricious and Popeye favourite dish to keep you going to the next dish.

This is chicken with lady fingers and some spice / herbs. I would not say this taste really awesome, but the lady fingers was pretty good actually.

As for desert, there’s Semiya Payasam – Desert made up of semolina of milk and Cashewnuts.

To me this seems like a fruit, but I did not try it before. (Can someone fill me up if you have knowledge about this?)

Alright, I tried to write this article to the best of my ability, if you wish share some of your knowledge, please do in the comments section.

A team of TRYBE volunteers, interns and staff ensembled like a whole tribe of ants at East Coast Park for a small bonding and learn more for all the existing and new volunteers that joined us.

After the short chat and mixing around at the Hut Reception, we moved to the open field for a gathering and icebreaking games (some sort, its just that everyone knows almost about anyone)
Basia and Min explaining the game – Facebook!, where you go around collecting profiles of others and spread it on to others.

The next game is really interesting, you have to act out the words which you will be given, for others to see and guess your actions.

Strategizing in progress right now.

I am done right now!

Vege’s group, human washing machine in progress!

Bingrong’s group, showing the human iPhone application. It looks like a user swipping a large icon off the screen.

A human made telly (Television), that looks like a sports programme. (Of Bingrong running, I guess)
During the game you will win a lot of speciality items like Toilet Paper, Empty Coke Cans, Strings and such and you will be wondering what is all this is for … Until …

We are going to build something really cool, some wooden planks from Ikea (meant for a bed frame actually), but its now meant for us.

Get the sides wooden frames up as well by tying lots of rope and masking tapes.

We add a small stick on the top (Can you guess what it is right now?)

And add another stick perpendular to the previous stick.

Than we add a cup to the stick!

After adding some colouring and design, ta-da! This is our semi-final workpiece!
And probably you have guessed it by now ..

We are building and playing our own Angry Birds, this is water bombs with all the birds on it, ain’t it cute! Its all hand made by our team here okay!

Our very own superstar, that shoots the birds out later! We are going to cover that in just a bit.
But we faced a really big problem – rain, and we are forced to come into the hut and pause our activities .. but work goes on for all the other groups.

Some groups tried to patch, yes and the curtains you see here is made out of toilet paper! Cool right, innovative!

And than we had lunch, so we had this really cool <strike> volunteer</strike> staff now at TRYBE to do us some really poses! (She is Min, and she is the planner for our event, yay!)

So we had really lots of food, sushi, 933 curry bread with chicken, drinks and chips.

Once lunch was over, we head back to our locations and start playing and tweaking our Angry Birds machines! So this is my group.

And than this is Vege’s group’s Angry Birds shooter!

Finally followed by Bingrong’s Angry Birds shooter!

Starting off with my group, we have 5 water bombs (birds), and 5 tries to see which birds goes the furthest! (Yes, there are no pigs)

Bingrong with his mighty water bomb!

And Vege’s target practice to see which flies the highest.

This is our very last try of our last bird, you can see how far it’s stretched, and our structure seems to be able to take the load fully!

All the Angry Birds on the ground, so we could easily see which flies the most and the highest.

All the volunteers had great time and great company during the day itself.
Thumbs up to everyone which contributed, organized and there for the event. Hope to see you guys again!

I think you must have heard of the irresistible offer on the papers or on social media. As a matter of fact, if you feel that you are new to this, you must be pretty dated, because sometime back (1 to 2 weeks prior to Burger King’s offer, McDonald’s did the exact same thing, putting up flyers on their website for people to print and to upload to their social network accounts (Facebook or Twitter) to catch more attention and the main reason, to increase sales. Except McDonalds had a offer for one of the meals.

There was a one to one offer [Get literally any other burger free] (Buy one get one free for any extra value meals) for a previous promotion they had.

Alright, lets move on to this promotion that Burger King had, I have to say that I am almost out of breath when I saw the devastating queue, it was so long that it took up more than half an hour of my lunch time just for queuing up. (One coupon is only valid for one physical person only)

You probably might think this is no big deal, by looking at this single photo, you should probably look at the photo below from the other angle.

That must be something crazy, right.

Alright, so after that long queue, no one actually cares about waiting for good food, isn’t it.

That’s the packaging for the burger, its looks kinda fine right.

Inside the burger contains some lettuce, the flame grilled patty, tomatoes and mayo.

Which would than look something like this!

Anyway, in my point, this is fairly interesting, leveraging on social media technologies which is crowd sourced to bring your product out to consumers.

I got the additional whopper and fries anyway, I skipped breakfast, so a heavy brunch.

Courtesy of @daphnemaia of Popeyes chicken in Singapore (Punggol Outlet).
Due to crowded Cathay outlet, because it’s located in the city and it’s only a single unit in the basement. So, I thought that the shot of the punggol outlet looks better for the post instead.

This is a shot of the 3 piece chicken, which I feel in comparison to KFC, its crispy and taste much better as it’s tender and its not overly coated with thousands of flour on it (Fully in my opinion that is). However, KFC have slightly better spices. But oh well, its a tradeoff.
In the background, that’s a biscuit, which is basically just small pieces of crispy baked bread, but it just taste so good. They also provide jam (as a topping) to be added on the biscuit.

Chicken Tenders 5 pieces, for about $8 SGD. Which you will get a drink, fries and 2 pieces of biscuits. The tenders isn’t appealing and cutting it for me, I rather you go over to McDonalds and eat their nuggets instead.

If you are wondering that you will be having ordinary fries such as the one you can get in the supermarket, you can pretty much forget about it because based on my analytical tongue, the fries is apparently good, crisp, hot and tender. You could really feel the potato in it and not coated with tons of flour. They also include their own spices like what 4 fingers bonchon chicken do.

If you have a chance, you should request for their drumsticks, I wouldn’t dare say its the best in the world. But you know, juicy, tender and sweet and that’s pretty much all on what I could describe how it taste like. – Which is obviously good!

Here is a cross section cut in it. if it looks sweet, you can definitely feel how it taste like. Again, not too much flour.

Again, one of the their known food is their mash potatoes, which is slightly different. I couldn’t quite explain it, but their sauce on the potatoes is pretty unique and not the style you will get in other fast food chains.

Go ahead and try it and here’s my homework for you, once you are done with it, tweet me @jeremy89632 and tell me how is it!
Yum.

Sunset View from the Entrance of Chinese Garden
Located at the back of the Chinese Garden MRT Station in Singapore, seldom knew that the station actually had a real garden behind the oftenly used transport terminal. With fluffy trees and traditional chinese buildings located about 3 minutes from the MRT station itself, its quite a wonder on how its oftenly unnoticed by passerbys.

As we walked into the garden, we immediately noticed that globalisation is taking place. It’s not just the Chinese, there is a blend of so many cultures such as Malays and Indians taking photos inside the garden. That’s multi-racial in the practical life!
When walking into the garden, I noticed a T-junction, one heading straight into the Tortoise museum, the other brings you to the other parts of the garden. On that day itself, I turned left, which brings me the nature and the surroundings of the garden.

I immediately noticed the Chinese Pagoda which is almost everywhere. You could even climb the stairs in it and see the scenery around the place.

It has the real chinese authentic feeling around the place.

As I walked further, there seems to be a few chinese statues, but this one is an interesting one about the Chinese confucius. Among many others, there are Hua Mulan and other statues of different emperors and important characters of the Chinese history.

In the Chinese New Year season, it is normal to see many Chinese phrases and greetings. So they put up some signage about the Chinese customs and greetings along this huge pagoda (Should be the biggest one in the entire Chinese Garden).
To give you an idea, it is the pagoda in the previous photo in the background of the confucius statue.

As we walked along the paths, we came close to a Chinese bridge and the Japanese garden ( I will provide a map and the opening hours at the end of this blog post). This was one of the random photos I took.
Just as when you thought it was starting to get boring.

I see a beautiful lake, yes, a really nice lake! With small chinese houses for you to sit along and walk around in.

You don’t need me to tell you about a good place for a romantic date isn’t it. There’s not much to spend on, no money involved and you get a spectacular idea of a heritage, just like in Chinese dramas.

Nice rocky paths to walk through, no I am not advertising for an adventure camp.

Lastly, we definitely have to talk about this Tortoise museum, it claims to have one of the biggest and coolest tortoise around. Frankly, I did not have enough time to cover this museum as time was up and they are about to close (To make things worst, the bad lighting condition and not having a great camera with crazy flash)
There’s a pond inside and there are feeding times for the tortoises inside, so if you really want to feed those cute ones, be sure to be there during their feeding hours. (If im not wrong, its free!)
They also have a souvenir shop inside which you can buy a wide variety of tortoises keychains and stuff from.

A view outside of the tortoise museum.

A view as I walk out of Chinese Garden.

Opening Hours:
Chinese Garden: 6am to 11pm
Japanese Garden: 6am to 7pm
Apparently there is a Japanese Garden, which I did not have time to get to, but you can visit there yourself and share with me your experiences there, which I can help you to link to your site if you do put up something cool.

I hope I gave you a cool perspective of the place and hope you do have fun there. Do share with me if you have any photos taken there.

Leave a comment if you have something to say!

I left the most important thing out! Nic Lee dancing! Get it in HIGH RES!
–
Click here for all the things I’m involved in TRYBE (Most of it, not all)

After volunteering with TRYBE close to 4 years in dozens of schools and spending more than 200 – 300+++ hours in all TRYBE related events, it was a really eye opening experience, many things have changed over the years, and I believe that the organization I’m volunteering have seen me through my entire rocky / transition path of my life. They have guided me in many ways possible and I am really grateful to continue putting in time for the rest of the youths which are still unclear in their future plans.
During the Volunteer appreciation party, TRYBE, would like to thank all of us reaching to the youths. The event is held in *SCAPE MMS (Near Somerset MRT) + Scape Park.

This are all the people which is present.

The registration team! They will take your name and put into a list of lucky draw, which you will see later.

So this is the set of “LUCKY” Draw. (Please, not that lucky, tissue box or water gun anyone? HAHAHAHA. The best prize inside there is a Nike Water Bottle. I think the wrapping is more expensive than the gift inside. They made the gift recipients open the prizes on stage)

After you are done with registration, take a look at one of these photos and choose one of the templates to put your photos in.

Once you are done, snap the photo and they will make it into a very nice card, which I will feature it in the end of this blog post!

The processing corner for all the cards and such.

The food for the day was pretty good, lots of seafood and its all catered. The desert is some kind of jelly and a really nice flavored drink.

TRYBE BRANDED CUPCAKES. THEY HAD ONE LAST TIME IN TRYBE OFFICE. THIS really taste amazing, the chocolate flavor is amazing.

Jamie and Jasmine (TRYBE Staff), they helped me through my life in TRYBE as a volunteer with them.

It’s really hangover, lots of food around here. BUT WAIT, the programmes haven’t even started yet! HAHA. SO yeah.

The starting Thank You message is by the Executive Director of TRYBE, Nic Lee. Someone which is really nice, you should try talking to him. (Hint).

Probably one of the most funniest man on stage, one of the award winners of last year’s Mr Charisma, T-Ru!
He was in TRYBE even before I joined and we spoke for quite a lil bit last time before, he is now in Singapore Airlines as a Jr Pilot.

We had many love presentations this year, many people getting married. Like Jasmine and Tony, and so much more too. This one is Raffy, he brought me into TRYBE and helped me throughout my volunteering period.

The failed dance that everyone first had!

The dance that made it right the second time.

Don’t get me started on my dance.
<

Hello,

(A view of Ngee Ann Polytechnic)

I really have to apologize that this is a late update of the blog, since its Christmas, I believe that it’s good that everyone could do some digital cleanup of their media devices. Nevertheless, all the content here is taken from March 2010, which is pretty recent, just a few months back from now.

We arrived in school, and the good thing is that there is no school on that day itself. We are visiting the media faculty of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s – Film and Media School. Which is going to interesting and fun. For those media inclined that is.

I still remembered why I took this photograph, picture tells a thousand words. We are the class which always takes the last bus, its like all the classes had already left the transport bay, we are still there waiting for a bus to come. This is the day which happened that we were one of the first classes that took the very first bus. As a matter of fact, we were 30 minutes early, and had enough time to hit the canteen at the polytechnic.
Our programme is held at one of the lecture theatres, which is spacious and obviously air conditioned. Here for some career and education planning talk.

You dive straight into the differences between the tertiary institutions paths, either JC or Poly. Which is either way, you could go. As in, literally they are showing the cards on the table to you.

There’s this professor which is telling us the advantages and benefits of their poly instead of the others and how poly operates as a whole.

After that we head over to the Film and Media School, which is a place where we’re touring today!

On our way, we saw some interesting places, one of which is Makan Centre. Which is their uber stylish canteen, air conditioned one that is. I heard that this is their biggest air conditioned canteen building which serve to the majority of the students in their campus.

So this happen to be our destination, the film and media school. On the first floor, which is the news broadcasting studio, we get to see some really cool stuff on air. They also have a studio apartment for dramas and television shows.

This is how it looks like in the control station in the news broadcasting center. When broadcasting, a typical setup would be 2 guys mending the control station.

All the prearranged cameras which is ready for shoot. Camera’s will be arranged to the best location when needed, it could also be moved live, with the director switching to the other camera, of course. Picture from the newscaster’s view.

After going up the lift to some high level, we went into their television and special broadcasting studio. Which is really cool, the computer is showing all the lighting positions in the room which we are going into. This is just the control station. It also shows all the available camera’s in the room so the lighting tech could adjust accordingly.

This is also part of the big control station in the television studio. This shows all the available video streams in the studio itself, so the director can choose the right scene in the right time for audiences to see.

This is the television studio itself, which is really nice and very bright. It’s really hot too, especially with the spotlights which generates lots of heat. Luckily the air condition is really strong. So it managed to subdue the heat issue.

This is just the entrance of the studio, its filled with headlights and its really bright. Again, the heat issue.

This is one of the mixing studios and controlling stations for the broadcasting centers, which is basically like an editing station. In brief that is.

This is the audio recording studio, which basically have this giant mixer full of line in’s, which is .. mindblowingly huge for just an audio production. A normal mixer would just need 5 to 10 line in’s.

This is Ngee Ann’s Poly radio called Radio Heatwave, which is their own in-house radio station.

J.
